More about Marriage and Family Therapy Profession

Marriage and family therapists (MFTs) are uniquely positioned to provide much needed help for couples with severe relationship or personal problems, providing systematic and systemic intervention for delivering cutting edge mental, relational and sexual health care.

Marriage and family therapists (MFTs) are mental health professionals that are regulated by licensure at the state level. Each state has its rules and regulations for practicing marriage and family therapy.

In general each state requires the following criteria:

  • A minimum of a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or related mental health field;
  • Completion of post degree requirements (for example: conducting psychotherapy sessions under qualify supervision);
  • and, passing of the national MFT exam

Individuals who meets these states requirements are eligible to become licensed as an MFT.

Marriage and family therapists are trained and licensed to independently diagnose and treat mental health problems. Marriage and family therapy is one of the core mental health disciplines and is based on the research and theory that mental illness and relationship problems are best treated in the context of its environment.

Trained in psychotherapy and family systems, marriage and family therapists focus on understanding. MFTs treat predominantly individuals, but also provide couples, family and group therapy. Family therapists focus on clients’ symptoms and interaction patterns within their existing environment. As such, they treat clients from a relationship perspective that incorporates systematic and systemic approach.

Family, marriage and couples therapy is a type of psychological counseling (psychotherapy) done to help clients improve communication and resolve conflicts. Relationship therapy or Family therapy is solution focused and often short term. Marriage and family therapy sessions can teach you skills to deepen relationship connections and get through stressful times, even after you’re done going to therapy sessions.
